In Italy, cakes and pastries are left for special occasions, or to please your mothers in law, whereas fruit is seen as the everyday dessert. Nothing is more ideal as a summer dessert than this simple preparation. You can even substitute the fruits listed in the recipe with your favourites. This recipe will also cater to the gluten free squad. Enjoy!

  • Step 1

    Mix sugar, ginger and black pepper together, then toss the cut fruits in the mixture. Place on a medium heated grill, or if not available, in a 200C pre-heated oven..

  • Step 2

    Cook between 4 to 8 minutes, depending on if like your fruit soft or crunchy. This is best served with a simple vanilla ice cream!.

  • 1 small pineapple, cored and sliced
  • 2 medium peaches or nectarines
  • 2 medium pears
  • 4 to 8 plums, cut in half and seeded
  • 1 orange, cut in 2cm thick slices
  • 100g brown sugar
  • 1 tbs fresh, finely-chopped ginger
  • Pinch of coarsely ground black pepper
